FITTING DIFF BREATHERS TO A 1999 PAJERO ESCAPE

The Rear Diff

After many water crossings I decided it was time to do a diff oil change and fit some Piranha Diff Breathers to the Pajero.

Piranha Diff Breather

Pajero water crossing
Even though the Pajero has a pretty good diff breather anyway, it has a fitting welded into the diff housing with a rubber tube running from this into the rear cross member, which is pretty good but i wanted to get the breather up as high as i could in the engine bay.

I removed the rubber tubing from the rear diff breather and replaced it with the black tubing that comes with the Piranha Diff Breather Kits.  Keeping the tubing high and clipping it up using the cable ties that come with the kit.

Remember when securing the hose up high to leave enough slack to allow for diff flex.

I then ran the tube along the underside of the vehicle clipping it neatly all the way through to the engine bay.  Mounting the bracket as high as possible.
The Front Diff
The front diff is a little bit harder only because of the awkward positioning of the breather.  If you are double jointed then this will be a breeze.

The front diff has a plastic swivel fitting which is much smaller in diametre to the rear fitting.  To over come this i left the rubber tubing connected to the breather and fitted the other end of the tubing to a hose joiner which allowed me to join to different diametre hoses, then i ran the new tubing up into the engine bay and connected the filter beside the rear filter.

A little hint to make fitting the breather hose a lot easier, do an engine oil change at the same time because the oil filter hangs directly in front of the breather, removing the oil filter allows you to get your hands in there to fit the hose much more easily.
